Storm Water Management Tips
- Use fertilizer sparingly and sweep up driveways and sidewalks.
- Direct downspouts away from paved areas.
- Never dump oil down storm drains.
- Bring yard waste to the township hall for recycling.
- Plant vegetation in bare spots of yards.
- Avoid pesticides.
- Take your car to a car wash instead of washing it in the driveway.
- Check your car for oil leaks.
- Pick up after your pets.
- Have your septic tanks pumped and systems inspected regularly .

New EPA Regulations
Starting January 1, 2009, Canton Township road crews are no longer permitted to install culvert pipes in ditches. Only driveway culverts and culverts under roadways that need to be replaced are permitted to be installed. The Federal EPA wants rainwater to leech naturally into the ground through roadside ditches and steams and not canalled into area streams at a faster rate than the normal flow of water. This should help alleviate some flooding situations.
New 5-Year EPA Permit
Canton Township is now under its second 5 year EPA Permit. Through this permit all municipalities, have new requirements regarding storm water management. Some of these new requirements on the township are:
- Create a list all catch basins, including size, condition and what it is made of (cement, metal, etc.)
- Map all storm sewer piping in the township, including size, condition and what is it made of.
- Map all open ditches, measuring its length, width and depth.
