The boom tractor has the ability to mow behind guardrails, on steep banks and along the township roadways. Also, it has a ditcher head that cleans township ditches and a brush hog attachment to clear the thick brush along road right-of-ways.
Some Common Questions Asked of the Road Department:
What can I drop off at the Township’s Recycling location?
You can drop off the following items from dawn to dusk, 7 days a week at the Canton Township Hall located at 4711 Central Avenue South.
- All colors of glass
- Paper
- Cardboard
- Metal
- Aluminum.
As a Canton Township resident you can also drop off yard waste, including these items:
- Leaves
- Grass clippings
- Tree branches
We DO NOT accept trash, concrete, bricks, dirt, tires or construction materials. Also, there is to be NO dumping by commercial businesses. The township recycling location is for residential use only.
Why has my street not been plowed yet?
Canton Township has 310 streets which total just over 98 miles of roadway to maintain. Covering the roads on both sides of the street is like maintaining 196 miles of roadway. Our township roads are divided into 6 dedicated plowing and salting routes. When only salting, each route takes about 4 hours to cover. If we are also plowing, it can take almost 8 hours to complete each route.
In these routes, the most heavily traveled streets which include school bus routes are done first. When a driver completes the main roads he starts on the side streets and then finally the allotment streets.
Sometimes it may look like we haven’t salted the roads, when we actually have. Road salt is more effective on heavily traveled roads. Cars and trucks driving over the salted roads break up the salt, creating a briny slush which spreads across the road and helps to clear it faster. So side streets with less traffic will take longer for the salt to help clear than busier roads.
