The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) is in independent agency authorized to hear appeals in matters relating to all zoning ordinances and to review zoning ordinance interpretations made by the Zoning Inspector. Because the Board acts somewhat like a court, it is called a quasi-judicial body and is required to follow accepted procedures and to fairly evaluate the relevant facts in each case that comes before it. The Board schedules approximately 12 hearings per year (one per month) and hears approximately 30 cases each year.

The BZA consists of five [5] members appointed by the Canton Township Trustees for staggered terms of five years. All members of the BZA are private citizens and must be residents of Canton Township. They serve only as a Board and not as Township employees and, as such, do not have office space nor are they available by telephone.

The BZA is supported by Zoning Department staff that receives and reviews applications. The staff is also responsible for sending out notification of pending appeals to interested parties.

Before you can apply for a Board of Zoning Appeals hearing, you must meet with Zoning Inspector (4711 Central Ave SE (330) 484-2501). Office hours are 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Mon. - Fri
